Paying With EBT And Using Coupons

Hey guys I had a reader reach out to me and asked a question about using EBT and coupons.
Here is her situation…(for name sake, I’m gonna call her Jane.)

Jane has been following the site and has been trying to shop with competitor and manufacture coupons but she has been paying with her EBT card. Jane has noticed that when she puts non-food items with her food item transaction; and after all coupons are used, EBT is paying for all the food items but she is left with paying for her non-food items (even though she had coupons for them).
Now, here is the problem…Jane knows that with a competitor coupon paired with a manufacture coupon she is supposed to get her non-food item free.
She has asked iheartbi-lo, What is she doing wrong and how to fix the problem still using her EBT to pay for your transactions.

Okay, after some investigation and sitting down and talking in great length to one of my Bi-LO managers; we have a solution!!!

If you are paying with an EBT card make sure all coupons are going in correctly. First, all competitor coupons are considered to be Bi-LO store coupon (or at least that is how the cashier is putting them into the system). Now, Bi-LO cashiers can put these  coupons into their system two ways: as a store food item  or as a store non-food item.

When Jane is left paying full price for her non-food item, the cashier has put the competitor coupon in the sytem as a store food coupon!!! Basically, it takes more money off the transaction that holds all the food items. Leaving you paying full price for the non-food item.

Hope this helps, Jane.    Good luck!

I think I would just do two separate transactions with the food and non-food items to make sure I was getting full credit for my coupons. I know this is more time consuming but worth it. Or maybe just ask the cashier to enter the competitor coupon as a non-food item?

    Hi,
Yes, I am in a situation where I too have to have a little help with groceries and have EBT. I noticed the same thing happening with me and my solution was to just separate the non-food from the food. It made it so much more easier than monitoring how the cashier was putting in the coupon. Hope this helps. :)

Its a pain in the rear, but I separate my ebt and non ebt items into 2 diff transactions to avoid these kinds of situations. I may seem time consuming but at least it will be done correctly without any issues. OR if I am able to make it back to my Bi-Lo before the sale ends I make a separate trip for my non ebt items.

My EBT issue is altogether different. At my Bilo it seems that Some of my coupons don’t like the fact that I use EBT because my total will be for example $30 after coupons, and when I swipe my EBT card it will go up to say $33 and then instruct the cashier to give me $3 cash! Its something I’ve had to deal with since I started couponing with EBT and I don’t know how to fix it. I know I am not getting full credit for all of my coupons and the cashiers have been told not to give the cash back so the store is cashing in on my coupons without giving me credit. Anyone else run into this problem?

Customer Service can put the 3.00 they were suppose to give you cash back on your ebt card.My store has done it before.
    • The difference you are seeing is actually tax…almost all coupons state that the consumer is responsible for paying any applicable sales tax. Since any EBT purchase is tax-free or the tax is forgiven, the cashier needs to hit a certain button, before you swip your EBT card, that calculates the correct EBT total. Most grocery stores already have their system set up to calculate the correct total once it recognizes an EBT purchase, Bi-lo is one of the few stores that require the cashier to chose EBT prior to the customer swipping the card. On your next visit, once the cashier tells you the total, tell her this is going to be EBT and wait for her to do what she needs to do and then swipe your card. You will see that your total changed slightly and after your card is approved, your balance due will be zero…unless of course, you did not separate food and non-food items. HTH
